OTRC: Demi Moore praised for Tweeting about anti-puppy mill campaign after billboard request

Demi Moore has been praised for using her Twitter feed, followed by more than 3.6 million people, to promote a campaign against puppy mills.

A billboard in Los Angeles, had called on Moore, 48, and her husband Ashton Kutcher, 33, to tell fans on the social networking service to visit the website dogsinacage.com and help spread the word about "the horrors of factory farming man's best friend."

On June 2, Moore Tweeted the message: "Help spread the word about Puppy Mills-Millions of Dogs desperately need our help!"

Animal rights groups have long called for the banning of puppy mills, which are facilities where dogs are bred and housed in what they say are unhealthy and inhumane conditions before they are sold, often online.

One of the campaign's sponsors, the Pennsylvania-based Main Line Animal Rescue, said in a recent statement that long-time animal advocate and comedian Carol Leifer, used her contacts in the entertainment industry to reach out to Moore and Kutcher earlier this month.

"The Tweet was met with elation throughout the animal welfare community and Miss Moore was praised for her commitment to the humane treatment of breeding dogs in factory farms," the statement added, quoting the animal rescue group's found Bill Smith as saying: "Demi Moore gives a voice to the voiceless and uses her celebrity to make the world a better place."

As of Tuesday, June 21, no message promoting the cause was found on Kutcher's Twitter feed. The campaign's website had said it singled Moore and Kutcher out "because we heard you have five rescued dogs" and because the two are "on the Top Ten list of celebrities on Twitter and have huge followings" and "seem like nice people with strong social consciences and obviously want to make the world a better place."

Moore and Kutcher have often used their Twitter feeds to promote humanitarian causes and their own charity, the Demi and Ashton Foundation. Main Line Animal Rescue said in its statement that Kelly Colbert, a producer who is working on a documentary about puppy mills, contacted Bob Harper of "The Biggest Loser" and Jillian Michaels of "The Doctors." The two later retweeted Moore's message to their own fans.
