Business to carry on despite Carmageddon

WEST LOS ANGELES

On Wednesday night at dinner time, the line of customers was out the door. But the busiest days of the week are Saturday and Sunday.

Owner Frank Pezeshki has been at the location on National Boulevard right off the 405 Freeway exit for 22 years. The freeway closure of July 15-18 could serve up a few problems for his restaurant business.

"Everything is perishable and you have to be as close to correct as possible because if you order too much you end up throwing it away and if you run short you lose money," Pezeshki said.

The 405 will be shut down to traffic for a 10-mile stretch from the 10 to the 101 freeways for a record 53 hours. "Carmageddon," as it is being called, is a topic of conversation at Hamburger Habit.

"There's just no way around it from what I'm hearing. There's nowhere to go," said Matt Grode of Beverly Hills.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials took part in an online chat session Wednesday, taking questions from people concerned about the 405 shut down.

The Los Angeles Police Department has their own cyber campaign asking celebrities to tweet words of warning to their fans.

Actor Eric Estrada is already getting into the act shooting both English and Spanish public service announcements.

But for those who have a hankering for a hamburger and have to venture out, Hamburger Habit will be open for business.

Asked if he has considered closing for the weekend, Pezeshki said, "No, closing this business is not a possibility, it's not a choice. We close three days a year and freeway closure is not one of them."
