Hop on board the Fillmore & Western Railway, a vintage train that rocks and rolls its way to Santa Paula and back to Fillmore every weekend.
"It's unique in that we have a variety of different equipment that range from the 1800s up to the present day," said railway owner Dave Wilkinson.
The railway makes its run Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30 a.m. The cost is usually $24 for adults and $10 to $14 for children.
"It's special because you get to actually ride on an old-fashion steam train. You sit outside, you see the beautiful countryside, and living in Los Angeles, you don't get that experience," said passenger Jeff Ammer.
Fillmore began because of the railroad, so you've got to visit the Fillmore Historical Museum on Main Street. It's made up of several vintage buildings, each filled with early day treasures, including a turn of the century kitchen in a 1905 house.
"Everyone finds the kitchen fascinating when you think about how much work it was to keep house in the early part of the last century. Everything was done from scratch," said museum director Martha Gentry.
The Fillmore Historical Museum costs $4 for adults, $2 for students and free for children 5 and under.
Across the street from the picturesque Fillmore City Hall on Central Avenue is a traditional Victorian tea room called Bella's Teas & Treats.
"It's outside of the norm of a coffee shop. There's the quaintness, the petit desserts that go along with it, or just really being able to step back out of the rat race," said Bella's Teas & Treats owner Felipe Perez.

Santa Paula's deep history is in the ground with oil, and the California Oil Museum on Mill Street is the perfect place to learn all about it while seeing one of the best collections of early gas pumps and more. There are hands-on activities for kids to do, plus movies.
When you get hungry, head over to Garman's Pub on East Main Street for their specialty: Irish tacos. It's corned beef, cabbage, cilantro and a special sauce inside of a corn tortilla.

If you're thinking of staying in a bit of history you might like the 100-year-old Glen Tavern Inn on Mill Street in Santa Paula.
The inn has a notorious past, it was once a brothel and a speakeasy. But some say it is haunted by a ghost named Calvin, a cowboy who was caught cheating at poker. Another connection to the spirit world is the penthouse suite at the inn, where legend has it Harry Houdini stayed during a big storm.

On the first Sunday of the month, check out the Aviation Museum of Santa Paula. The "Chain of Hangers," nine in total, are open for exploration 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. There is no admission fee for visiting the museum. You can also book an appointment for a tour.
Fillmore and Santa Paula is a world apart from the Los Angeles area but less than a tank of gas away.
