Crude oil was pooling on Goldenwest Street just south of Ellis Avenue in Huntington Beach Friday, prompting a closure of southbound lanes of Goldenwest between Ellis and Garfield avenues, according to the Huntington Beach Fire Dept.
The oil was discovered about 6 a.m. Friday seeping to the surface.
The surface spill was estimated at approximately 20 barrels of oil, about 850 gallons, according to the Huntington Beach Fire Department. The oil was contained before it got into any storm drains.
Some vehicles had driven through the oil patch before authorities arrived, spreading the oil south toward Garfield.
The Crimson Pipeline company is believed to be the owner of the leaking pipe.
The initial cleanup of the road was under way Friday. Authorities were uncertain how long the southbound road closure would remain in place but efforts were being made to re-open the road as soon as possible, according to Huntington Beach Fire.
It was initially reported that both directions of Goldenwest were closed.
