OTRC: Susan Lucci talks 'All My Children' finale, 'Desperate Housewives'

Susan Lucci appears in a scene from 'All My Children.'

Susan Lucci says she thinks "All My Children" will end like a "great novel" and is already thinking about her next project - could "Desperate Housewives" be in her future?

The show is set to air its last episode on Sept. 23 and another soap opera, "One Live To Live," will broadcast its series finale in January 2012. ABC announced in April that the shows will end their runs after some 40 years on the air.

Lucci, 64, told the television show "Access Hollywood" that news of the cancellation of "All My Children" "came as a surprise" but that "if you came to the studio, you'd never know anything happened because everybody's just cooking on all speeds."

"However it's going to end, it's going to be fantastic," Lucci said. "I think probably like all great novels, it's ends with you wondering what happens next. That's what I'm going to guess, but I don't know what the details are."

"For everybody involved, it was sad that they didn't know ahead of time," Lucci added. "People sold home in bad markets, rented and uprooted children. So that part is really awful. But what are you going to do?"

Lucci remained coy when asked about recent reports that say she may appear on the ABC show "Desperate Housewives," which stars Eva Longoria, who had herself begun her television career as a soap opera actress, appearing on CBS' "The Young and the Restless" in 2001.

"There's been a lot of talking but we'll see," Lucci said about the prospects of appearing on "Desperate Housewives." "It's a show I like very much. Of course the cast is amazing."

"All My Children" celebrated its 40th anniversary in January 2010. Lucci joined the cast full time in 1980. Lucci told OnTheRedCarpet.com in a statement in April that her time playing Erica Kane on "All My Children" has been a "fantastic journey.

Lucci has also appeared on shows such as "Dallas, "Hope & Faith" and "That's So Raven." She released a book called "All My Life: A Memoir" in March.
