Jennifer Aniston says her film "The Break-Up" helped her cope with her real split from Brad Pitt.

Aniston, 42, and Pitt, 47, married in 2000. In January 2005, they announced they had broken up and the following March, Aniston filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The two have no children together.

In 2004, Pitt filmed the movie "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" with Angelina Jolie, who would later become his life partner and mother of his children.

In the summer of 2005, Aniston filmed "The Break-Up" with Vince Vaughn. The two play a former couple who bicker over a condo they bought together.

"It was just a beautiful human story about a couple breaking up," Aniston said on the Bravo show "Inside The Actor's Studio" in an episode set to air on Monday, July 11. "I was slightly familiar on the topic. I sort of honestly felt like what a great way to sort of exorcise some of that."

When host James Lipton asked the actress if the familiarity made it easier or harder, Aniston said: "Easier, oddly. I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed it. You would think otherwise, because even the producers were like, 'I don't know if we should ask you to do this' and I was like, 'Why not? Turn the page. Let's move on.'"

Pitt and Jolie stepped out together in April 2005 and in October of that year, his and Aniston's divorce was finalized.

Also in 2005, Aniston and Vaughn began dating. "The Break-Up" was released in June 2006 and in December of that year, the two announced that they had split.

Jolie, now 36, revealed in an interview with Vogue, published just a few weeks later, that she and Pitt fell for one another on the set of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," which depicts the two as a married couple, but remained "good friends" until he and Aniston announced their split.

Aniston told the magazine in 2008: "There was stuff printed there that was definitely from a time when I was unaware that it was happening. I felt those details were a little inappropriate to discuss. That stuff about how she couldn't wait to get to work every day? That was really uncool."

Tabloid and magazine reports about the Aniston-Pitt split and the Pitt-Jolie relationship prompted a slew of merchandising opportunities and "Team Aniston" and "Team Jolie" T-shirts soon popped up in stores.

In December 2005 , after Aniston's divorce was finalized, the actor's spokesperson confirmed that Pitt had filed papers to adopt Jolie's adopted son, Maddox. The actress also brought home a girl, Zahara, from Ethiopia. The couple welcomed their first biological child, daughter Shiloh, in 2006. They adopted another son, Pax, a year later and Jolie gave birth to their twins, Knox and Vivienne, in 2008.

Meanwhile, Aniston has a new man in her life - 39-year-old actor and writer Justin Theroux. Photographer Terry Richardson recently gave fans a glimpse of the happy couple snuggling in New York.
