Mariah Carey may have a more significant role on Simon Cowell's upcoming music competition, "The X Factor," if the former "American Idol" judge gets his way.

The Grammy-winning singer was expected to appear on the premiere of "The X Factor," but inside sources are now saying that Carey might stay on to mentor contestants throughout the season.

A show insider told Entertainment Weekly, "Mariah and Simon are great friends, and now [that] she has had her babies, it's very possible that she will be involved [in] some way in the later stages of the show. She has always said she wanted to work with the show, so it's something they will certainly be discussing ideas for soon."

Former "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul, music mogul Antonio "L.A." Reid and Pussycat Dolls front woman Nicole Scherzinger have all been confirmed to join Cowell at the judge's table, while Welsh television presenter Steve Jones has signed on to host.

Cowell has openly expressed his desire for Carey to join the show and told the trade publication that the new mother is "on great form."

"I think Mariah will have a role on the TV live shows. I met her recently and she was on great form. And her idea was to be the judge of the judges, which only Mariah could come up with," Cowell said. "She'll be involved in some form. I literally adore her. I love her to bits."

"The X Factor" is seeking undiscovered talent 12 years old or over, in solo artists or groups who will perform in front of the panel in hopes of winning a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music.

Carey, 41, gave birth to a son and daughter, Monroe and Moroccan, on April 30 on her and her husband Nick Cannon's third anniversary.

"The X Factor" premieres on September 21 on Fox.
