After months of searching for a head of the police department, Costa Mesa announced on Monday it has a new chief.

Newport Beach Police Capt. Tom Gazsi was chosen to replace Christopher Shawkey.

Shawkey resigned in March during a city investigation that he filed expense claims for personal trips he took to Arizona. He lived there before being hired by Costa Mesa.

Gazsi has been with the Newport Beach Police Department for 27 years. He takes over at a time when the City Council has approved cuts to the force.
