Martin Scorsese's new documentary film "George Harrison: Living in the Material World," based on the life of the former Beatles singer, has been acquired by HBO.
The famed director worked with Harrison's widow Olivia on the film, which will air in two parts on the cable network on October 5 and 6, according to an HBO statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com.
"George Harrison: Living in the Material World" features some unreleased material and interviews with the singer and his friends and colleagues, including Harrison's fellow Beatles singers Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono - the widow of fourth band mate John Lennon and musicians Tom Petty and Eric Clapton.
The British band The Beatles was most famous in the 1960s and helped revolutionize the rock n' roll music scene in the United States. George Harrison was one of the group's singers and its lead guitarist. He also released solo music - such as the hit songs "My Sweet Lord" and the 1987 pop track "Got My Mind Set on You."
George Harrison died from cancer at age 58 in 2001. Lennon was shot dead outside his New York home in 1980, when he was 40. McCartney, 69, and Starr, 71, are the only surviving Beatles members and continue to make music.
"Like so many millions of people, I first came to know George through the music, which was the soundtrack of our world," Scorsese said in HBO's statement. "George was making spiritually awake music - we all heard and felt it - and I think that was the reason that he came to occupy a very special place in our lives. So when I was offered the chance to make this picture, I jumped at it."
George Harrison married his second wife Olivia in September 1978, just after the birth of their son, Dhani, the singer's only child. Before that, George Harrison was married to model Pattie Boyd from 1966 to 1977. She later wed Clapton.
"Spending time with Olivia, interviewing so many of George's closest friends, reviewing all that footage, some of it never seen before, and listening to all of that magnificent music - it was a joy, and an experience I'll always treasure," Scorsese said.
Scorsese, Olivia Harrison said, "sensed what George was about: His music, his strong beliefs, his art, his place in the Beatles' story and his extraordinary life afterwards."
"Marty's wonderful film has found all of that and more," she said. "I always hoped HBO would be our North American partners because of their respect for artistry. I am doubly happy to be working with their excellent team."
Olivia Harrison also plans to release a book, also called "George Harrison: Living in the Material World," containing photos, letters and other memorabilia from George Harrison's life in late September.
