The crashed happened at Merced Avenue and Baldwin Park Boulevard on Saturday morning.
Investigators said the officer was trying to chase down stolen car suspect David Perez.
Two minutes into the pursuit, police said Perez crossed a median, turned his car around, and rammed head-on into the officer.
The officer is said to be in stable condition with moderate injuries.
Perez is facing a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
