The first trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises," the third installment in Christopher Nolan's critically and commercially successful reboot of the Batman franchise, hit the web on Monday.

The teaser trailer, which can be seen below, shows clips from the past two Batman films, a flash of the new villain Bane (Tom Hardy), and Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) speaking to the hospitalized Police Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman). The trailer premiered before "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II," the final installment of the successful franchise.

Last week, a promotional poster for the film debuted, showing a cluster of crumbling skyscrapers viewed from the ground up, forming Batman's logo. The image also appears in the teaser trailer.

In May it was reported that Matthew Modine, Tom Conti ("Reuben, Reuben") and 11-year-old actress Joey King ("Ramona and Beezus") signed on to join the cast of "The Dark Knight Rises" under director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale.

Warner Bros. Pictures officially announced in April that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had joined the cast. According to the statement from the studio carried by the Associated Press, Oscar-winner Cotillard will play a character named Miranda Tate "a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham."

Both actors have worked with Christopher Nolan before in the 2010 film "Inception."

The two actors joined their fellow "Inception" co-star Tom Hardy who will play as the villain Bane, an escaped convict who gains superhuman strength due to a series of drug experiments.

It was confirmed in mid-January that Anne Hathaway will star in "The Dark Knight Rises" as Selina Kyle, whose alter-ego is Catwoman. In the DC comic books, the character is the love interest of Bruce Wayne, who masquerades as the superhero Batman.

"The Dark Knight Rises" is set for release on July 20, 2012. Check out the trailer below.
