'Shrek Musical' star's green transformation

GLENDALE, Calif.

The talented actors who perform in "Shrek the Musical" every night at Hollywood's Pantages Theatre performed live for fans at the Americana at Brand in Glendale on Tuesday.

It meant a few extra hours in full costume for actor Eric Petersen.

To end up looking his colorful best for each performance, Petersen goes through quite a transformation.

"We put on a bald cap, the cowl, Shrek ears, then three prosthetic pieces," he said. "By the end of it, the only part of my skin is lid and eyelids. Takes an hour and a half, then another 15 or 20 minutes to get into costume, the fat suit and the boots. But by the end, it looks pretty cool."

The best part is the reaction he sees on the faces in the audience.

"At the beginning of the show, I come out and kind of scare them with a big roar," Petersen said. "In the theaters we can see the first few rows, but I see a few kids that their jaws just go 'Ahh!' They can't believe it. It's really me."

"Shrek the Musical" continues at the Pantages through the end of July.
