Thirteen-year-old Dez Heal was playing with friends in his Lynchburg backyard when he decided to use a bamboo spear as a sword.
The teen put the stick down his shirt and while jumping the spear shifted. Dez landed on the tip of the spear and it went through his neck.
"I'm thinking that I might pass out, maybe during the surgery when they pull it out, it's going to start gushing and they may not be able to save me. I'm hoping that it hasn't hit anything important," Dez recalled.
The bamboo spear did not hit any major arteries, but it took about five hours to get it out.
