Tortoise gets wheel in place of amputated leg

SPOKANE, Wash.

The 12-year-old African tortoise's front left leg had to be amputated due to an injury, and doctors came up with an inventive way for him to get around.

Gamera the tortoise now has a wheel in place of his left front leg. The 23-pound tortoise's owner brought him to Washington State University's veterinary hospital after he got injured.

Veterinarians couldn't save the tortoise's leg, but they did come up with the idea of putting a swiveling wheel in its place.

The vets said Gamera is adjusting well to the replacement and is making his way around just fine. The wheel was attached to the tortoise's shell using an epoxy adhesive.

His name comes from a flying turtle monster in 1960s Japanese movies.
