OTRC: 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood' gets animated spin-off (Photo)

It's time to zip up the sweater and put on the tennis shoes once again.

PBS announced that an animated spin-off of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" called "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" will air on PBS Kids in the fall of 2012. The show will star characters from the original show's "Land of Make Believe" who have grown up and had pre-school age children of their own.

The series is set to be a multi-platform series, complete with free interactive games, online resources for parents and other content. It will be aimed at pre-school audiences. The show's host will be 4r-year old Daniel Tiger, son of the original Daniel Striped Tiger, and his pre-school friends. The series was developed by the Fred Rogers Company and Out of the Blue Enterprises.

"We're very excited to be creating a program that builds on Fred's legacy in such fresh and innovative ways. Fred knew that school readiness skills are the foundation for academic achievement, and a full life, and now a growing body of research confirms this," Bill Isler, President of The Fred Rogers Company, said in a statement.

Fred Rogers died at the age of 74 in 2003 from stomach cancer. "Mister Roger's Neighborhood" aired from 1968 until 2001 and reruns of the show were also broadcast on PBS until August 2008.
