The first image of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in the upcoming "The Dark Knight Rises," has been released.

From the photo, it appears that Hathaway's Catwoman costume will be more functional than seductive and instead of a cat-like mask, Hathaway dons goggles for the role.

It was confirmed in mid-January that Hathaway would star in "The Dark Knight Rises" as Selina Kyle, whose alter-ego is Catwoman. In the DC comic books, the character is the love interest of Bruce Wayne, who masquerades as the superhero Batman.

"The Dark Knight Rises," the third installment in Christopher Nolan's critically and commercially successful reboot of the Batman franchise, is slated for release on July 20, 2012.

In May it was reported that Matthew Modine, Tom Conti ("Reuben, Reuben") and 11-year-old actress Joey King ("Ramona and Beezus") signed on to join the cast of "The Dark Knight Rises" under director Nolan and star Christian Bale.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced in April that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had joined the cast. According to the statement from the studio carried by the Associated Press, Oscar-winner Cotillard will play a character named Miranda Tate "a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham."

Both actors have worked with Nolan before in the 2010 film "Inception." The two actors joined their fellow "Inception" co-star Tom Hardy who will play as the villain Bane, an escaped convict who gains superhuman strength due to a series of drug experiments.

The role of Catwoman was first played by Julie Newmar in the 1966 "Batman" TV series, a role which was eventually taken over by Eartha Kitt in the third season. On the big screen, Michelle Pfeiffer donned a latex cat suit for the 1992 "Batman Returns" and Halle Berry appeared in the critically-disdained 2004 film "Catwoman."
