OTRC: Tom Felton is glad 'Planet of the Apes' is not a 'Harry Potter' film (Video)

Tom Felton talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com at the Hollywood premiere of 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes.'

Tom Felton, who stars in the new movie "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," says he is glad to be a part of a film that is unrelated to "Harry Potter."

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which hit theaters on August 5, is a prequel to the film franchise, which depicts the power struggle of apes whose intelligence is boosted via human experimentation.

"I'm very excited. For one, this is a new project for me that doesn't have 'Harry Potter' written behind it, which is great," Felton told OnTheRedCarpet.com co-host Chris Balish at the film's recent premiere. "I'm excited to see it and see how fans react to it and it's fantastic that so many people would turn out for it."

"All the previous 'Planet of the Apes' fans are going to be truly satisfied and the ones who didn't really get it before - it's a real fresh approach to the franchise," Felton added. "It's not like the guys in the monkey costumes before, who are talking. It's set in modern day, so we have a much more relevant story than there's ever been before I think."

Andy Serkis stars as Caesar, the leader of the apes, and Felton's character is put in charge of supervising him and his friends at a facility. James Franco portrays scientist Will Rodman. The film also stars John Lithgow and "Slumdog Millionaire" actress Freida Pinto.

"When I tell people I'm in the new 'Planet of the Apes' movie, they're like 'Oh great! Did you wear the monkey costume?' and I'm like, 'No, no, no, no,'" Felton told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "That's going to be pushed into history now with the technology that we can do what we do. I haven't seen much of it yet, but even what I have seen is phenomenal."

The visual effects team, Weta, was responsible for the performance-capture technology, which won them Academy Awards for all three "Lord of the Rings" films and "King Kong."

Felton is best known for his portrayal of the nefarious Draco Malfoy in the long-running "Harry Potter" franchise.

"It's bittersweet, you know?" Felton told OnTheRedCarpet.com in July, ahead of the release of the final movie, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," which hit theaters in July.

"We've all very glad and grateful that we've had the run that we've had," he said. "It's obviously sad to say good-bye to the kind of mini family we've grown up with."

Felton's "Harry Potter" co-star arrived at the "Planet of the Apes" premiere wearing a T-shirt that read "I heart Tom Felton" on it ( See photos from the premiere). Reporting by Chris Balish, co-host of KABC Television's entertainment show "On The Red Carpet" (check for local TV listings).
