Iran's state TV's website reported that Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal each received three years for illegally entering Iran and five years for spying. It's not clear if that includes time served.
The two men deny the charges, saying they unknowingly crossed into the country while hiking in July 2009.
Their fellow hiker, Sarah Shourd, was released on $500,000 bail last September, and returned to the United States.
Bauer and Fattal have 20 days to appeal the sentence.
