OTRC: Selena Gomez to host the 2011 MTV VMA pre-show

Selena Gomez is set to host the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show on August 28, the network announced on Friday.

"I am very excited to be a part of the 2011 VMAs! After all of my years watching the VMAs, the pre-show has always been one of my favorite parts. It is a true honor to be hosting from the black carpet this year," Gomez said in a statement to MTV.

The 18-year-old actress will be "reporting breaking news and interviewing her peers alongside MTV News correspondents Sway, Jim Cantiello and James Montgomery," according to the press release.

The Awards show is slated to have performances by Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne and Adele, among other, Check out the full list of nominees. The band Cobra Starship is scheduled to perform during the pre-show, which will also include an exclusive teaser from "Jersey Shore."

Fans can vote online in general Video Music Award categories like Video of the Year, but are exempt from voting in the professional categories like Best Art Direction.

Gomez has been dating pop star Justin Bieber, 17, since late 2010. The two drew the wrath of some of his fans when they stepped out together at the 2011 Academy Awards in February. Many posted nasty comments and even death threats against Gomez on Twitter.

In July, "Sex and the City" author Candice Bushnell said that she would love to have Gomez play the character of Charlotte York in a prequel to the movie franchise.

Gomez is known for her role as Alex Russo on the Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place" and has starred in films like "Ramona and Beezus," which was released last year. She is also a singer and recently released her third studio album, "When The Sun Goes Down."

In June, Gomez appeared in the film "Monte Carlo" opposite actresses Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy as well as "Glee" actor Cory Monteith.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8.
