OTRC: Joel McHale says 'Spy Kids 4D' literally stinks

Joel McHale talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com about 'Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D.'

Joel McHale says his new movie "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D" literally stinks, thanks to something called Aroma-scope.

"It literally does [stink] because of Aroma-scope," McHale told Cari Skillman of KABC, OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company. "That's what I would tell them and then I would say, 'Listen talk show guy, why don't you see the movie first and let me know. And then if you still think it does... then just keep it to yourself, Mr. talk show guy."

The Aroma-scope element was introduced with a scratch 'n' sniff numbered card, which includes at least one scent which is less-than pleasant - farts.

In "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D," the actor plays a spy-hunting reporter Wilbur Wilson, who is married to secret agent Marissa Wilson (Jessica Alba) who comes out of retirement and recruits her two stepchildren to try to stop the villain The Timekeeper, portrayed by Jeremy Piven.

The film also features returning stars Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara.

Much of the movie was filmed in front of green screens, which doesn't always allow the actors to envision what the finished product will be. McHale said he wasn't sure what to expect from director Robert Rodriguez.

"When you read the script, you're like 'Okay,' then there's this huge battle in the air between these guys in this huge layer of underground and I'm like, 'Great... if you can pull it off, jeez, great,'" McHale said of the experience. "There was one time where we were shooting and it was all green screen, with this huge green screen balcony and he goes, 'Come over here and I'll show you what you're looking at' and it's just this vast, huge, enormous clock thing, so that was really cool. When you see it all put together... it's funny to see it when it's kind of being put together cause there's stuff all over the place and it looks like this crazy world that is just in progress."

McHale is best known for hosting the E! show "The Soup" and for his role as Jeff Winger in the NBC comedy series "Community." The actor joked that he feels his career luck was a fluke.

"I feels like someone's made a mistake or I won a prize of some sort, that I get to be in these things," McHale said. "Hopefully I don't completely stink it up. See! Aroma-scope - it all comes right back."

McHale married Sarah Williams in 1996 and has two sons, Edward Roy (born 2005) and Isaac Hayden (born 2008).

The actor will next appear in Seth MacFarlane's comedy "Ted," opposite Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and Laura Vandervoort. The film follows a grown man (Wahlberg) whose childhood teddy bear comes to life and gets in the way of his love life. "Ted" is slated for a July 13, 2012 release.
