August 26, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
A large explosion killed at 16 people and seriously damaged the main office of the United Nations in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on Friday. At least 11 others were injured, officials said.

A U.N. official calls it a bomb attack.

Witnesses told The Associated Press that a sedan broke through the exit at the U.N. compound, ramming through two separate gates as guards tried to stop the vehicle.

The U.N. building, which houses about 400 employees, is in the same neighborhood as the American embassy.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
