Jury selection begins in Muslim student protest trial

SANTA ANA, Calif.

The students are charged with misdemeanor conspiracy, after disrupting a speech by the Israel ambassador to the U.S. last year at University of California, Irvine.

Sunday night a prayer service was held in Garden Grove. Local Muslims gathered to show their support for the students.

They say the students were just exercising their freedom of speech.

"We stand in solidarity with them and support them in this trial," said one supporter. "We hope that everything comes out for the best."

Eight of the students are from U.C. Irvine; the other three are from U.C. Riverside.

One of them is expected to have his charges dropped in exchange for completing 40 hours of community service.
