Thieves use van as battering ram on Cerritos gun store

CERRITOS, Calif.

Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle crash into the Ammo Bros. guns and ammunition store at 15979 Piuma Avenue in Cerritos at 4:40 a.m. Monday.

Deputies found a blue and white 1984 Chevrolet van had crashed into the front doors of the business.

The van was reported stolen from Bellflower Saturday night, according to the sheriff's department.

Deputies determined the van was used as a battering ram to enter the store in an attempt to burglarize it.

The store was heavily fortified enough to resist the attempt to crash through the front, according to the department. The suspects were unable to enter the store and nothing was stolen.

"Due to the nature of the crime, where the suspects were presumably targeting firearms, detectives are actively investigating the incident," said Lieutenant Richard Harpham. "Had the suspects been successful and the guns were on the street, it would present an inherent danger to the public."

A gray sedan and a champagne-colored Ford Excursion may have been used as getaway vehicles, according to the department.
