Calif. schools make gains, but face federal sanctions

A record number of California schools are meeting or surpassing the state goal for student achievement.

A record number of California schools are meeting or surpassing the state goal for student achievement.

Forty-nine percent of the state's public schools scored at least 800 on the 1,000-point academic performance index.

It's the ninth straight year the state has made gains. But the news isn't all good.

More than 900 California schools are not making the grade and could be subject to sanctions under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
