A neighbor walking a child to school noticed the fire just before 8 a.m. and called 911.
Crews arrived on the scene a short time later and were able to contain the fire to the garage. That's where firefighters found hundreds of marijuana plants.
No one was in the house at the time of the fire.
Officials say the renter was stealing electricity and it was the illegal bypass that sparked the fire.
