OTRC: Matt Damon: Horrifying 'Contagion' situation is plausible

Matt Damon talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com at an event to promote the film 'Contagion' in September 2011.

Matt Damon fights to survive amid an outbreak of a deadly virus in the new thriller "Contagion" and says the science in the movie is "really accurate."

The action film was released on Friday, September 9, and also stars Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne and Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays the wife of Damon's character and the mother of their daughter.

"You can go pretty far down the rabbit hole with this stuff," Damon told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "But it's true, I mean the science in the movie is really accurate. That's one of the things I loved about this, as horrifying as it is, it's actually plausible."

The 40-year-old actor is himself a father to four daughters, including one from his wife Luciana's previous relationship. Damon says it was easy to relate to his character, Mitch Emhoff.

"I mean all he wants to do is keep his daughter safe and everything he does," he said. "I kind of looked at it and went, 'Yeah, that's probably what I would do too in this situation.'"

Damon said that he was impressed by Scott Z. Burns' script and director Steven Soderbergh's execution of the film. The actor is an Oscar-winning screenwriter. He and friend and actor Ben Affleck took home an Academy Award in 1998 for co-writing the film "Good Will Hunting."

"It was a very tight script," Damon said about "Contagion." "It's only, I think, 105 minutes, that's very short and that's by design, he wanted it to feel simple and lean and so if he could tie up a storyline, he basically did everything in the most economic way he could, I think."

The actor is currently rocking a bald look that he says is for an upcoming film directed by "District 9" writer/director Neill Blomkamp.

"I've sheared it all off for a movie I'm doing that's going to come out in 2013, called 'Elyseum,'" Damon said. "So just remember 'Elyseum' and it will all make sense."

Damon is also known for his roles in "The Departed" and "Inside Job" and played Jason Bourne in the first three "Bourne" spy films. Afourth is set to be released in 2012. Damon does not appear in the new film, which is called "The Bourne Legacy" and which is directed by Tony Gilroy. Damon said in February that he would like to reprise his role in a future movie in the series.
