Officials said a large group of gunmen shot from a tall office building that was being built near the U.S. Embassy. Other embassies are also in the area.
It's unknown if there were any casualties.
The Obama Administration said it wouldn't allow the brazen assault in Kabul to deter the American mission in Afghanistan, warning the attackers that they would be relentlessly pursued.
It was the third major attack in Kabul since late June, casting doubts on U.S. plans to stem violence in the country and withdraw all troops by 2015.
