The crash occurred Saturday at an event in West Virginia.
The graphic scene was caught on video. The footage shows two T-28 planes cross each other's paths and fly off in opposite directions.
That's when one of the planes suddenly dove to the ground, hit the runway and burst into flames.
The pilot, John "Flash" Mangan of North Carolina, did not survive.
The West Virginia Air National Guard said no spectators were hurt.
The plane was part of the T-28 Warbird Aerobatic Formation Demonstration Team, which performs at air shows around the country.
A day before this crash, a plane crashed during a show in Reno, Nev., killing the pilot and eight others and sending dozens to the hospital.
Federal officials are investigating what caused Mangan's plane to crash.
