A 25-year-old man was taken into custody after he allegedly hit a pedestrian on purpose with his car, say police.

Authorities said the incident happened near the 400 block of Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach at about 9:15 p.m. on Sunday.

Investigators said two pedestrians were walking in the crosswalk when the driver, Jared Polk, screeched to a stop and nearly hit them.

At that point, one of the pedestrians approached Polk and questioned what he had done. Polk then backed up his Honda Element and then drove directly toward the two pedestrians, hitting one of them. The other pedestrian was able to get out of the way.

Hermosa Beach police later located Polk, who was positively identified by the victim.

There was no word on the condition of the person who was hit.
