"Desperate Housewives" returns for its eighth and final season on Sunday, September 25, and will bring the ladies of Wisteria Lane back "full circle" to how it all began.
Warning: Spoiler alert!
Eva Longoria, who plays Gabrielle Solis, told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith that season 8 is "reminiscent of season 1" with "one mystery tying us all together."
"I really like that, because it brings us all together again," the 36-year-old actress said.
James Denton, who plays Mike Delfino, says he noticed the comparison when he read his script for the first episode of season 8, which also helped him predict the demise of the ABC drama show.
"When I first got the script for this first episode, it felt so much like season 1," Denton, 48, told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "It had a real 'full circle' kind of feel to it so I kind of saw it coming. The last couple of years, we've sort of preparing ourselves for the end. I think they could have gotten a few more years out of it but ... you don't want to stay at the party too long."
Season 7 ended with a shocking death and cover-up that involves the main cast members, played by Longoria, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman and Teri Hatcher.
"We'll be wrestling with guilt," Strong, 51, told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith. "At the end of last season, the girls, kind of as a community, buried a secret and that secret starts to unearth a lot of things in people's lives in different ways. How do you deal with that guilt? How do you deal with the nightmare of what you did?"
"That's really what's going to be the theme of all of the women on the lane as how each handles it differently. Each is going to have to grapple with the truth of that and the fear of being caught. It's like when you're a little kid and you steal a piece of penny candy and you immediately go up to your mom and go, 'I did this!' because you've just got to tell. It's hard to keep a secret. We keep secrets really well, here. Dirty little secrets."
Strong portrays Mary Alice Young, whose suicide depicted in the show's 2004 premiere served as the mystery of the first season. She narrates the series.
"It's been such a gift," the actress said, regarding her time on the show. "I'll remember stabbing someone. I remember shooting myself multiple times in the head. The writers keep bringing me back to shoot myself in the head again and again. I'm like, 'Really guys, this is insult to injury, I don't want to shoot myself again.' It's like 'Groundhog Day.'"
Vanessa Williams joined the series in 2010 and plays Renee Perry, an old college acquaintance of Scavo. She told OnTheRedCarpet.com that her character finds herself a new love interest in season 8, adding: "He's a cutie and it's nice for Renee to have someone to play with. It's been a dry spell for her. And hopefully she'll be enjoying some fruits of some labor."
Ratings for "Desperate Housewives" have fallen consistently since its premiere. Its previous seventh season was watched by less than 12 million viewers, estimates show. The show's debut season was viewed by an average of more than 23 million people. ABC said in August that "Desperate Housewives" would end after its eighth season.
"I did go into a funk but ABC did us a wonderful gift - we got a year to plan," said Huffman, who plays Lynette Scavo. "So it hasn't quite hit. I think it's more of an intellectual exercise as this point."
The 48-year-old actress is the only cast member to have won an Emmy for her role on the show. "Desperate Housewives" has won a total of seven Emmy Awards.
"I understand why the network and why people really want to go out strong but I know there's still an audience there, there's still a passionate following," said Doug Savant, who plays Scavo's husband Tom. "I guess it's best to go out strong and not after people have lost interest."
