"Gossip Girl" returns on Monday, September 26, for a fifth season that will see its main star, New York socialite Blair Waldorf, caught in a love triangle, or possibly a love square, amid wedding preparations.
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Waldorf, played by Leighton Meester, is engaged to Prince Louis of Monaco but still harbors feelings for her old flame, bad boy Chuck Bass. And then there's New York "commoner" and writer Dan Humphrey, the ex-boyfriend of her best friend, Serena van der Woodsen, who Waldorf had mostly looked down upon up until recently.
"Blair is dealing with her wedding ... and with the new responsibilities of being royal," Meester said in a promotional interview. "She's also exploring her friendship - relationship with Dan, which I also really like. They have a funny relationship and I kinda want to see where that goes. I think it's cute and it's not like a relationship with anyone else. I think she kind of is her real self with him."
Humphry also has a different problem to tackle - he had written about Wardorf in his novel, which his other former love interest, Vanessa Abrams, stole from him.
"He is forced to come back to New York and try to find out what exactly she did with it - is it being published, who has it?" Executive producer Joshua Safran said. "And he makes some unlikely allies in that quest."
Also in season 5, viewers will learn the identity of the owner of the positive pregnancy test that was disposed of on the fourth season finale, Van der Woodsen, played by Blake Lively, tackles a new job in Hollywood and Elizabeth Hurley will make her debut as a new character - a sexy and mysterious media mogul named Diana Payne.
Jessica Szohr, who plays Abrams, and Taylor Momsen, who has portrayed Humphrey's little sister Jenny since "Gossip Girl" debuted in 2007, will not return as season regulars. Momsen said in August that she had quit the show and acting in general to focus on her music career. However, Kaylee DeFer, who was introduced in the previous season as Van der Woodsen's cousin Charlie, has joined the cast full time.
