Taye Diggs is known as a theater, film and television actor and can now add a new title to his resume: Children's book author.

The 40-year-old actor, who plays a strong, charismatic doctor in ABC's drama "Private Practice," penned "Chocolate Me!," which details one boy's struggle to fit in with those who are different from him. The book was released on Tuesday, September 27.

Diggs, who is African-American, says everyone should be "proud" of who they are.

"You should be proud and embrace your differences regardless if its race or religion or if something is looked upon as a handicap," Diggs told USA Weekend of his inspiration to write the book.

Diggs and wife Idina Menzel, who is white, acted together in the Broadway musical "Rent" and share a 2-year-old son named Walker. Diggs describes being a parent like a "beautiful science project."
