The officers were transported to California Hospital Medical Center. Both officers suffered injuries to their faces. One was treated and set to be released, while the other officer was hospitalized with a "survivable wound," according to LAPD Cmmdr. Andrew Smith.
The shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. in the area of Leeward Avenue and Magnolia Avenue. Smith said the officers, who are part of the Narcotics Division, came across a shooting in progress between two groups of people. The officers split up and tried to intervene but were struck by gunfire.
Two men were detained as possible suspects, but nearly 100 officers continued to comb the streets for two other suspects late into the night by foot and helicopter.
According to an LAPD press release, the city was under Tactical Alert, meaning the department would be responding only to emergency calls for service.
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck was at the scene of the shooting.
The LAPD's elite Robbery-Homicide Division detectives were also at the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.
