Gov. Brown signs bill to prevent circumcision bans

SACRAMENTO, Calif.

The bill takes effect immediately. AB768 was in response to a measure proposed in San Francisco that would allow voters to decide whether circumcising most male children should be illegal.

They argued it was an unnecessary procedure that could lead to sex and health problems later in life.

Opponents said circumcision is a tradition for Jews and Muslims and can reduce the risk of cancer and sexually transmitted diseases.
