David Lavau, 68, remains hospitalized at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Santa Clarita since he was found a week ago.
The hospital says Lavau's condition has been upgraded from serious to fair.
He underwent shoulder surgery last weekend.
Family members located Lavau using his cellphone signal.
He says he survived by drinking water from a creek and eating bugs and leaves.
An 88-year-old man, whose car went off the road in the same area two weeks before, was killed. His body wasn't located until Lavau was found.
