When Rosie O'Donnell first saw her new girlfriend Michelle Rounds, she didn't think she stood a chance at romancing her.
"I thought she was a 28-year-old heterosexual girl, because that's what she looked like to me. And she's a 40-year-old gay woman," the comedian told "Nightline" correspondent Cynthia McFadden in an interview set to air on Monday night. "My gadar was way off."
"I think if I had known that she was gay, I wouldn't have been brave enough to talk to her," O'Donnell revealed.
The 49-year-old is gearing up for her big return to television this week when her new talk show "The Rosie Show" premieres on October 10 on Oprah Winfrey's OWN. O'Donnell first publicly stepped out with Rounds on September 19 at her annual Rosie Theater Kids Gala in New York City.
Rounds is a corporate head hunter in New York. O'Donnell was previously married to long-time partner Kelli Carpenter from 2004 to 2007. The couple adopted three children: Sons Parker and Blake and daughter Chelsea. Carpenter gave birth to a daughter named Vivienne Rose in 2002.
From 1996 to 2002, O'Donnell hosted her own daytime talk show "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," which earned her six Daytime Emmys for outstanding talk show host. O'Donnell, who has often been deemed abrasive, butted heads with Elizabeth Hasselbeck when she co-hosted "The View" in 2006. She left the show a year later.
The OWN network, a joint venture between her firm Harpo Inc. and Discovery and took over what was formerly the Discovery Health cable channel.
