Yucaipa man arrested for alleged sex assault

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.

Investigators are still sorting out the details of the incident. They say it began at Bailey's Sports Bar and Grill, after two women found themselves stranded early Thursday morning.

After they attempted to get a ride home from a relative, they accepted one from a minor acquaintance who was also at the bar.

"He offered them a ride home," said Cindy Bachman from San Bernardino Sheriff's Department. "They accepted the ride home, and while in route to their home he pulled off the road and allegedly sexually assaulted both of them."

Investigators arrested 36-year-old Jeffrey Betcher at his mother's home on suspicion of kidnapping with the intent to rape.

The victims told detectives Betcher drove them to a remote area along Highway 38 and forced them to have sex with him.

The victims told police that they were dropped off near Bryant Street when a motorist spotted them and stopped to help.

"At that time they advised him that they had been sexually assaulted," said Bachman. "The gentleman called 911 and waited with the victims until the deputies arrived."

Deputies later found the truck belonging to Betcher abandoned not far from the location and tracked him down.

Betcher is now being held at the Central Detention Center on $1 million bail.

The suspect's mother, who did not want to appear on camera, said that there's more to the story than the victims are letting on. She also says that her son has been struggling with difficult times recently, and has had a hard time trying to find work.
