The crash happened just after midnight on the southbound side of the 101, north of Highland Avenue. Witnesses told CHP officers three vehicles collided in the No. 1 lane.
One person, identified as 19-year-old James Hicks of Hollywood, was killed in the collision. An unidentified 21-year-old female motorist from Pico Rivera suffered minor injuries to a knee, according to the CHP.
All southbound lanes of the 101 were closed for several hours overnight, but have since reopened.
