Rashida Jones got a chance to work with her "hero" Steve Martin in her new film "The Big Year." The actress, who is known for her roles in "Parks and Recreation" and "The Office" said that she "worships" her three co-stars in the recently released comedy.
"The Big Year," which opened in theaters on October 14, follows three men who are avid bird watchers competing to spot the rarest birds in an annual event.
Stu Preissler (Steve Martin) is a New York businessman trying to pursue his lifelong passion before it's too late, Brad Harris (Jack Black) is looking for a purpose and Kenny Bostick (Owen Wilson) just wants to keep his winning spot. Ellie (Jones) is also a bird-watcher, and might just help Black's character find his romantic purpose in life.
"I feel incredibly grateful to be on set with those three hilarious dudes," Jones said in a recent interview provided by 20th Century Fox. "They are incredibly different, and they are all equally great actors, and really funny, and I kind of worship all three of them.
"Steve Martin? Forget it. 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles,' 'The Jerk,' 'Saturday Night Live' - he's my hero. He's the expert," Jones added. "He's like this great banjo player, he is so well-read, he's just cool, he loves being here, he's hilarious and fun to work with. Owen is charming and warm and he plays this eccentric character with these crazy clothes and somehow looks really good in them, which I think is hard to pull off. And Jack is just - I just love Jack, he's my buddy."
Jones went on to describe her quirky character Ellie, who is an "avid-birder" like her male co-stars' characters.
"Ellie is an avid birder, but she is not doing The Big Year [competition]," Jones added. "She's very enthusiastic about her life-list which is the amount of unique species she's seen over the course of her life. She's also an avid bird-caller, and she befriends Jack's character, and maybe there's potential for something more."
The 35-year-old actress went on to describe her deep respect for director David Frankel and his films.
"David Frankel is the chillest, smartest - he's one of those people who's smart so he doesn't have to show anybody that he's smart, he just gets it," Jones said. "There's something about him - I mean his movies for me the common thread is that they're about relationships, I mean whether it's about high-fashion or a couple and their dog. I mean the common thing is that you walk into the dynamic of the relationship, and you really believe it and you care about the people, you want them to succeed - you want them to find happiness."
Jones is known for her role in films such as "I Love You, Man" and "The Social Network," as well as television shows "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation."
Jones will appear in the 2011 film "The Muppets," starring Jason Segel who appeared with Jones in "I Love You, Man."
