As of 3 p.m. Monday, westbound lanes of the freeway were shut down west of the 5 Freeway. One eastbound lane was open while authorities investigated the scene.
A garbage truck collided with two other vehicles, causing a fire on the truck.
At least one other person was trapped in another vehicle.
One person was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
It was not clear if the deceased died at the scene or was pronounced dead en route to a hospital.
