OTRC: Elisabetta Canalis says she had a 'father-daughter relationship' with George Clooney

George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis have broken up after dating for about two years, the two said in a statement to OnTheRedCarpet.com on June 22, 2011. The reason for the split was not made clear. Clooney and Canalis, a 32-year-old Italian actress who appeared in the 2005 comedy film 'Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo,' were seen together in public in Italy a week before their breakup was announced and celebrated the actor's 50th birthday in Los Angeles in May, People magazine reported. Clooney, once dubbed People magazine's sexiest man alive, and Canalis first stepped out together in September 2009. They also attended the 2011 Academy Awards together. The actor has been previously linked to Sarah Larson, a Las Vegas cocktail waitress and former winner of the reality show "Fear Factor." The two dated from 2007 to 2008. Clooney was also married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 until 1993. The actor said on the CNN show "Piers Morgan Tonight" in January that he had no intentions of marrying again. Clooney has also expressed his disinterest in becoming a father. Canalis told the Italian edition of Cosmopolitan magazine in an interview published in February that she had no plans to have children. In her native country of Italy, Elisabetta Canalis is famous for being a television personality and model. In America, the former "Dancing With The Stars" contestant is likely best known for dating George Clooney.

While Canalis mostly kept quiet about her time with Clooney while on "Dancing With The Stars" she recently offered some details about their relationship in a new book by Italian journalist Bruno Vespa called "This Love."

Canalis reportedly told Vespa, according to People magazine, that Clooney "has been a special for me, and very important, just as a father would be." She added, "Between us there was more of a father-daughter relationship. I was unable to clarify this up 'til now."

Clooney and Canalis dated from June 2009 to June 2011. The model and television personality also denied that their relationship ended because she wanted to be married. "George and I never spoke of marriage nor of having kids," she said. "I don't put limits to the possibility of having them, but neither George nor I had ever envisaged having kids together. The end of the relationship was not caused by a marriage issue, but instead by our personal needs."

She added, "George is a real gentleman even in his private life." Canalis continued, "I was very much respected both as a woman and partner."

In September, Clooney defended Canalis against reports that she was sending him harsh text messages for moving on with Stacy Keibler. The actor issued a statement to TMZ which said that the stories were "completely fabricated in order to sell magazines. I never comment on my personal life unless it affects others... and this lie affects others."

"Since I would be the only actual witness, I ask you to correct your story immediately, but that would assume you cared at all about telling the truth," Clooney continued.

Canalis and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, became the second pair to be eliminated from the 13th season of "Dancing With The Stars" on September 27, 2011.

She said performing on the competition was "a gift."
