OTRC: Regis Philbin to be replaced by Jerry Seinfeld on 'LIVE!' ... temporarily

Jerry Seinfeld talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com at a post-Oscar party thrown by Vanity Fair magazine on March 8, 2010.

Jerry Seinfeld is set to temporarily take over hosting duties after Regis Philbin leaves his post at ABC morning show "LIVE! with Regis & Kelly" later this month.

The "Seinfeld" comedian and actor will co-host the program with Kelly Ripa for three episodes, airing between November 21 and November 23, organizers say. He is one of several celebrity guest hosts the show has lined up.

Others set to helm the show with Ripa after Philbin leaves are "Sex and the City" actress Kim Cattrall, "America's Got Talent" host Howie Mandel, television chef Jamie Oliver and Miss Piggy and Jason Segel. The latter two appear in the upcoming "Muppets" film, which is due to hit theaters on November 23.

"Jerry is a great friend of ours, and a friend of Kelly's, and it doesn't hurt that he's an entertainment icon," executive producer Michael Gelman said in a statement. "It's a great way to kick off the new beginning of our show."

Philbin, 80, is set to make his regular appearance on "LIVE! with Regis & Kelly" on November 18 after serving as a host on the show for about 25 years.

ABC has said the show will continue with Ripa, who joined him as co-host about 10 years ago. The show will be called "Live! with Kelly" until a permanent replacement for Philbin is announced.

Philbin took time off from "LIVE! with Regis and Kelly" last year to have a blood clot removed from his leg and to have hip replacement surgery. He also underwent a triple heart bypass procedure in 2007.

Celebrities who have stepped in for Philbin during his absences include actress Lisa Rinna and Ripa's husband, actor Mark Consuelos.

Philbin began his television career in Los Angeles, working for KABC Television, OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company. He moved to New York in 1983 and co-hosted "The Morning Show" with Cyndy Garvey on local station WABC Television, which produces ""LIVE! with Regis and Kelly." Garvey was replaced by Kathie Lee Gifford in 1985 and the show became nationally syndicated in 1988.

Gifford left the series in 2000 and Philbin co-hosted it with guests until Kelly Ripa joined the program full-time in 2001.

Philbin, a three-time Emmy Award winner who once hosted the ABC game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at the Daytime Emmy Awards in 2008.
