Sheriff's detectives investigate fatal Wal-Mart beating in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Calif.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies say without any warning, a 47-year-old man grabbed an aluminum baseball bat from inside the store's sporting goods section and began beating the 74-year-old victim.

According to deputies the attack was so quick there was no time for witnesses to step in.

Wal-Mart issued a statement Tuesday:

"We express our deepest condolences to the family of this man as they grieve the loss of their loved one. We are working closely with law enforcement to offer what information we have such as surveillance video that might help with the investigation."

"It appears that the suspect and him just meet randomly in the sporting goods section. That's what it appears to us from the surveillance video that captured the incident," said L.A. County Sheriff's Homicide Detective Lt. Eddie Hernandez.

At this point officers say the attack was not only random, but completely unprovoked.

Deputies said the suspect has not spoken much since being taken into custody.

The investigation is ongoing.
