OTRC: Gabourey Sidibe: I shoplifted when I was 12 (Video)

Gabourey Sidibe and Casey Affleck talk to OnTheRedCarpet.com at a press junket for 'Tower Heist.'

Gabourey Sidibe and Casey Affleck might be big stars, but they could relate to their "Tower Heist" character's thieving pursuits.

"I remember, it's a terrible story, I went on a class trip to the Empire State Building," Sidibe told OnTheRedCarpet.com at a press junket for the film. "I was in junior high and all of the kids were stealing things from the souvenir shop cause there were so many people in there that you just couldn't do anything [to stop it]. And I kind of wanted to fit in, remember I was like 12, and I stole a Statue of Liberty keychain. And then I lost it on the way home, 'cause that's karma."

"I've stolen a few scenes," Affleck offered, before adding, "No, I was always well-behaved."

Sidibe, who won an Oscar nomination for her role as a troubled teenager in the 2009 film "Precious," and Affleck appear alongside main stars Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy in "Tower Heist, which follows a group of hard-working employees who, after falling victim to a wealthy business man's Ponzi scheme, conspire to rob his high-rise residence. The film also stars Alan Alda, Matthew Broderick, Téa Leoni and Michael Peña.

"I think we were thinking that while we were making it - 'How are we going to do this? How's this going to get pulled-off?'" Affleck said of the plot. "But it is one of those movies where it keeps you on your toes, it keeps you laughing and then wondering what's happening and then laughing and wondering what's happening. So it works well in that way."

Sidibe's charismatic character starts to seduce Murphy's character, who was brought into the heist as a former thief to train the newbies. Murphy wasn't the only one entranced by the Oscar-nominated actress though.

"Maybe it's a bit of the accent? I really like Odessa, she reminds me of women I've kind of grown up with," Sidibe said. "She reminds me of my best friend's mother, nurses that I've had that were really nice. I like Odessa a lot too."

Affleck and Sidibe's characters play down-on-their-luck high-rise employees who are left broke in their boss' Ponzi scheme, but the actors said they can imagine not being wealthy.

"I don't know, I've only been fancy for about a year," Sidibe said. "And I'm in fact not very fancy. I don't have a whole lot so everything felt familiar, it wasn't like falling completely back into obscurity."

"I think that's a better question for Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller," Affleck quipped.

"They are very fancy," Sidibe agreed.

Affleck had a small role in his brother Ben Affleck's 1997 film "Good Will Hunting." He has also appeared in films like "Ocean's Eleven," "Lonesome Jim," "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," "Gone Baby Gone" and "The Killer Inside Me." He also wrote and directed "I'm Still Here."

Sidibe was nominated for an Oscar for her breakout titular role in the 2009 film "Precious." She has since appeared in the film "Yelling to the Sky" and the TV series "The Big C."
