Leonardo DiCaprio says director Clint Eastwood's new film "J. Edgar" is "historically accurate" and constitutes the filmmakers' interpretation of "what went on behind closed doors."
DiCaprio, known for such films as "Inception" and "Revolutionary Road," stars as the title character in the biopic, which explores the career and personal life of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. The film was released on Wednesday, November 9.
While Hoover was seen by many as one of the most powerful men in America, he was also a man of many secrets. His right-hand man, Clyde Tolson, was also rumored to be his lover. He is played by Armie Hammer of "The Social Network" fame.
"We tried to give a comprehensive look at everything that happened in his life," DiCaprio, 36, told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Chris Balish at the recent Los Angeles premiere of the film. "Everything in this movie is historically accurate. What happened behind closed doors ... this is our interpretation. These two men were together and inseparable for 50 years."
DiCaprio, estimated to be the highest-paid male actor, went on to talk about how Hoover would have to act differently had he held the position today. The man died in 1972 at age 77.
"I think it's definitely a different era," DiCaprio added. "With WikiLeaks, with the Internet, information is distributed so rapidly, and all it takes is one person having to open their mouth and that information is distributed around the world. So, I don't think he would have been able to operate within the same context that he did in that time period."
"He had basically a core group of people that wouldn't release his secrets," the actor added. "To this day, no one really knows what were in his files. No one really knows the truth about what he did and how he manipulated different activities in our politics - nobody really knows."
DiCaprio is also busy with anothe film project - he is working on Baz Luhrmann's movie "The Great Gatsby", which also stars Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher.
