OTRC: Billy Crystal named new host of the 2012 Oscars

Actor and comedian Billy Crystal will return to host the 84th annual Academy Awards, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com on Thursday, November 10.

"Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show," Crystal wrote on his official Twitter page on Thursday. The Tweet was later ReTweeted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' offical Twitter account.

He will replace Eddie Murphy, who stepped down as host of the ceremony on Wednesday following the departure of director Brett Ratner as a producer of the awards show on Tuesday.

It will be the ninth time for Crystal as host of the ceremony. Only Bob Hope has hosted more Academy Awards presentations, with 19 ceremonies between 1940 and 1978. Crystal last hosted the Academy Awards in 2004.

On Wednesday Brian Grazer was named as a replacement producer for Ratner, who left the position after stirring controversy for using a gay slur during a screening of his film "Tower Heist" and discussing his sex life in media interviews. Grazer will join Don Mischer as a producer of the 84th Academy Awards. This will be the first time Grazer has produced the Oscar telecast.

"Like so many others, I've been eager to see Billy host again. It's very gratifying that he agreed to do it with Don and me at the helm," Grazer said in a statment on Thursday obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com.

"Some of the best moments of my career have happened on the Oscar stage. I am thrilled to be back there. Actually, I am doing this so that the young woman in my pharmacy will stop asking me my name when I pick up my prescriptions," Crystal said.

The awards ceremony will air on Sunday, February 26, 2012 on ABC, OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company. It will be Murphy's first time hosting the awards ceremony.
