Marine Kelsey De Santis says she had a "wonderful" time with her date, Justin Timberlake, at the Marine Corps Ball, while the singer and actor said the evening was unforgettable.
The corporal had invited Timberlake to accompany her to the November 12 event via a YouTube video in July. He accepted his invitation with the encouragement of his "Friends with Benefits" co-star Mila Kunis, who has promised to accompany another marine to another Marine Corps Ball on Friday.
"It was wonderful," De Santis said on NBC's "Today" show on Tuesday, November 15, regarding her time with Timberlake. "I had a really good experience. He had a big smile on his face and so did I."
"The whole night was extremely - bringing sexy back," she joked, referencing one of Timberlake's hit songs. "It was a good time. We were on the dance floor and having a good time at the table, joking and laughing. It was all together really great."
The actor donned a black tuxedo to the event and was picked up at his hotel by Corporal de Santis, who was wearing her Marine Corps dress uniform. De Santis, who is the only female at the Martial Arts Center for Excellence (MACE) at Marine Corps Base Quantico, later changed into a low-cut silver mini dress.
"I knew I would have an evening that I wouldn't forget," Timberlake said on his blog. "Something I could tell my friends about. What I didn't know was how moved I would be by the whole experience."
De Santis, he said, was "humble," "honest" and "very cool."
"She also simultaneously seemed like she was nervous about the whole evening and if I was going to enjoy myself," Timberlake wrote. "'Are you ok?' she asked 2 or 3 times. 'I hope you are having fun. I know you will once my crew of friends get here to the table.' I have to tell you, it's not every day that I meet a 23 year old girl and she's more worried about if I'm having fun or if I'm comfortable!"
"The evening wound down for me as, I had to catch a plane," he added. "But, I have to say that I had so much fun with Kelsey and her crew of friends. They were just really nice people. Classy Marines but, not without a great sense of humor. Real individuals but, not without a sense of community. I said my goodbyes to them but, not before I got a chance to tell them how much the evening had meant to me. They made me feel so welcome to be there and I'll never forget it."
At one point during the event, the guests were shown a video of Marines talking about their experiences regarding World War II and Pearl Harbor as well as the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
"They spoke with a pride that only they could have acquired through their experience as a US Marine," Timberlake wrote on his blog. "While this tribute was playing, you could hear a pin drop. It was a surreal moment to be in that room with so many of our great Marines who have such a different type of connection to those stories. I was truly moved."
"The sweetest moment definitely was ... after the ceremony ended and being able to see his face as well as everyone else's face," De Santis said on the "Today" show. "He had a smile on his face, you could see he genuinely cared about what it is they saw."
