Adopting children is becoming more and more a reality for gays and lesbians who want to become parents.
"We have found that gay and lesbians families are not a second choice. They're an equally good choice," said Sari Grant, recruitment director for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.
A recruitment event was held at a West Hollywood café Tuesday night for gay and lesbian couples who are considering adoption.
They were invited by the DCFS, which has been working with other local agencies on the Raise a Child campaign.
Stephen Palmer and Alex Lara have been together for 2 1/2 years and say they're ready to build their family.
"I think we have a lot of love to give," Lara said. "We both come from strong families."
There are currently 500 children of all ages, mostly African American and Latino, in the county waiting for a family.
The process to become an adoptive parent can take several months. The agencies involved want to make sure they're placing children in the best homes possible and they say the gay and lesbian community is good solution to the problem of homeless children in bad situations.
