Author Sarah Vowell has joined Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" as the new Senior Historical Context Correspondent.

Vowell made her debut on the show on Thursday night, where she talked about Evacuation Day, which marks the day the last British troops left New York at the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783.

Evacuation Day falls on November 25, the day after Thanksgiving and for the occasion, "The Daily Show" made a cartoon starring Peanuts characters. Vowell also went into grizzly detail about the British occupation of New York.

Vowell, who is often described as a "social observer," is a New York Times bestselling author and has written six non-fiction books on American history and culture. She is also a contributing editor for NPR's "This American Life."

Vowell has also dabbled in acting, appearing on television series like "Six Degrees" and "Bored to Death." She also appeared briefly in the 2010 film "Please Give" and voiced the character of Violet in the animated film "The Incredibles."
