"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I" earned the top spot in Friday's box office, earning the third biggest opening day ever.
"Breaking Dawn" brought in an estimated $72 million on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter and is expected to earn up to $140 million over the weekend.
The film is performing slightly behind "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which opened on the same weekend two years ago, earning $72.7 million on Friday and $142.8 million over the weekend, according to the industry magazine.
The biggest opening day record still belongs to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," which earned a record $91.1 million on it's opening Friday but was also released in more theaters.
"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" depicts the wedding of Bella Swan, a human played by Kristen Stewart, and Robert Pattinson's character, vampire Edward Cullen, and the consequences of their union. The movie is the first part of the fourth installment of the fantasy romance series, which is based on the novels by Stephenie Meyer.
The movie also stars other returning cast members such as Taylor Lautner, whose werewolf character, Jacob Black, remains jealous of the tragic couple, and Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Kellan Lutz and Jackson Rathbone, who play Cullen's adopted siblings. Their parents are portrayed by Peter Facinelli and Elizabeth Reaser.
The previous three movies, the first of which was released in 2008, have grossed more than 1.8 billion worldwide. The second part of "Breaking Dawn" is due to be released on Nov. 16, 2012.
The weekend's other releases "Happy Feet Two" and "The Descendants" had softer openings.
"Happy Feet Two" grossed an estimated $5.9 million on Friday and is expected to earn between $22 million to $24 million for the weekend. The 3D animated film follows the main penguin Mumble, portrayed by Elijah Wood, and his family and friends who realize that global warming poses real threat to their home and are forced to band together in order to survive.
Robin Williams reprises his roles as penguins Lovelace and Ramon and Sofia Vergara, Pink, Hugo Weaving, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt also voice characters in the film.
George Clooney stars in "The Descendants" which played in 29 theaters and has grossed an estimated $397,000 domestically.
In the film Clooney plays Matt King a man who tries to reconnect with his two daughters when his wife falls into a coma after getting into a boating accident. While on a trip to Oahu as a trustee of his family's land, King learns his wife was having an affair.
